TCA: MTV orders two comedies, renews 'Kesha'

Date July 26, 2013

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - MTV has ordered two new comedy pilots, as well as greenlighting a second season of "Kesha: My Crazy Beautiful Life," MTV president of programming Suzanne Daniels said Friday at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills.

The first new comedy pilot, "Faking It," comes from Carter Covington ("10 Things I Hate About You") and follows two best friends who'll do anything to be popular in high school, including pretending to be something they're not.

"Happyland," meanwhile, comes from Ben Epstein and executive producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan ("Drop Dead Diva," as well as films like "Hairspray" and "Chicago."). The soapy teen comedy explores the underbelly of one of the nation's most popular theme parks and the people who live there.

Daniels also announced that the network is working on a documentary revolving around Miley Cyrus as she works on her next album. The Cyrus documentary along the lines of previous MTV documentaries about Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, "delves deep into the transformation she has experienced over the past few years," the network said in a release.

During the presentation, Daniels also revealed that Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin (whose credits include "Criminal Minds," "The Event" and "Revenge") have signed on for the network's pilot for "Scream," a small-screen adaptation of the popular horror series.

Of MTV's already existing series, Daniels said that the late-night offering "Nikki and Sara Live" will return July 30 at 11 p.m., while "Awkward" will be back in October, as will a new season of the "Jersey Shore" spinoff "Snooki and JWoww." "Teen Wolf" returns to the air January 6.
