Enter our handy-dandy mathematical equations for this week's summer premieres!
OK, you're probably thinking that math and TV don't mix, but you're sorely mistaken. One show you love (+) another show you love (+) actors you adore = awesome. A show you kind of like (-) the parts you like = pass. Simple as that.
Here, we've done the math on four shows premiering this week -- 'Weeds,' 'The Big C,' 'Melissa & Joey' and 'State of Georgia' -- so put away your calculator and set your DVRs. Or not.
'Breaking Bad' (-) 'True Life: I'm Addicted to Meth' (+) 'Prison Break' = 'Weeds'
Season 7 of 'Weeds' jumps forward in time three years, as Nancy adjusts to life after prison and sets up shop in NYC. Still dealing with the show's titular drug, there's an added element of suspense when you're an ex-con.
'Weeds' Season 7 premieres Mon., June 27, 10PM ET on Showtime
'Nurse Jackie' (-) 'ER' (+) Lifetime cancer movie = 'The Big C'
Showtime's comedy formula -- have a notable actress play a middle-class woman hiding a giant problem -- is starting to show its age these days, especially with this brittle "comedy" about a woman with cancer. We love Laura Linney, but the point of this series seems to be to give her a few dozen awards-bait scenes.
'The Big C' Season 2 premieres Mon., June 27, 10:30PM ET on Showtime
Recycled Sitcom Cliches (+) Charming Leads (+) More Episodes = 'Melissa & Joey' Season 1.5
'Melissa & Joey' doesn't try and pass itself off as anything that it's not. It's a straight, classic, cheesy sitcom with two charming leads and an often annoying laugh track. Season 1.5 is just more of the same ...
'Melissa & Joey' Season 1.5 premieres Wed., June 29, 8PM ET on ABC Family
Raven-Symone (+) any "girl tries to make it on Broadway" chick flick/lit/show = 'State of Georgia'
What happens when the powers of sitcom star Raven-Symone and chick lit author Jennifer Weiner combine? This delightful comedy about a Southern belle trying to make it in the big city, with a couple of Serious Issues thrown in. It's exactly as hammy as you think it'll be, but that's kind of comforting to know.
'State of Georgia' premieres Wed., June 29 at 8:30PM ET on ABC Family
