Romney on Cash Cab? What Did You Think of SNL Weekend Update Thursday?

Date September 21, 2012

Live from New York, it's... Thursday night!

In honor of the nonstop flow of mock-worthy material commonly known as election season, Saturday Night Live resurrected its Thursday night half-hour specials. Thursday's episode, the first of three, was high on chuckles but low on guffaws, and the political moments were heavily Romney-focused. Jay Pharoah's newly-minted Barack Obama was nowhere to be seen.

The cold open, a Fox and Friends segment dissecting Mitt Romney's 47 percent comments, purported to reveal some additional new footage from the now infamous private fundraiser where Romney delivered his controversial remarks. The sketch featured Romney, as played by Jason Sudeikis, trying to dine at a McDonald's in order to relate to common voters, winding up in a Cash Cab taxi with his wife Ann, and singing in the shower.

Who does a better Mitt Romney: Jimmy Fallon or Jason Sudeikis?

But the best part of the open was the "one or two corrections" sight gag, supposedly of mistruths Fox News fact-checkers had found from the first part of the show. For 30 seconds, a multitude of blink-and-you'll-miss-it revisions rapidly scrolled across the screen. Some of the better ones this time around? "They did not name Mars after the Mars Rover," "Cat Fancy is a magazine, not a man/cat dating website" and "A wind turbine has never cut off the head of a pretty girl in a convertible."

Bobby Moynihan's "Drunk Uncle" character also made an appearance during Weekend Update, but felt out of place in a show that was touted as being focused on the election.

Watch a few of the skits below. What did you think of Weekend Update Thursday?
