The U.S. women's soccer team found redemption at the Olympics on Thursday, beating the Japanese team 2-1 in the gold medal game, making this their third consecutive gold medal, fourth overall.

The game was a rematch of last year's World Cup, in which the Americans lost during penalty-kick shootouts to the Japanese 3-1. This match was dominated by Carli Lloyd, who scored both goals for the Americans, one of which came within the first eight minutes of the first half. Yuki Ogimi scored Japan's only goal in the 63rd minute.

The women's soccer final arguably became one of the most buzzed-about events of the Olympics, with U.S. narrowly beating Canada in the semifinals to cement their place in history: They have never, in the five times women's soccer has been eligible at the Olympics, missed being part of the final match. The U.S. team was also undefeated throughout the entire London Olympic competition.
