NBC Orders Revamped Craig Robinson Comedy Mr. Robinson

Date January 06, 2014

A year after originally developing a comedy pilot starring The Officealum Craig Robinson, NBC has picked up a new version of the show. The Peacock Network has given a six-episode order to Mr. Robinson, starring the comedian as a musician who winds up taking a job as a middle school music teacher.

As part of the pickup, Robinson's former The Office boss, executive producer Greg Daniels, is no longer involved with Mr. Robinson. Instead, Mark Cullen and Robb Cullen, who most recently executive produced ABC's Back In the Game(which was not picked up for a full season), are now showrunners and executive producing, along with Howard Klein and Mark Schulman.

Also no longer involved is Owen Ellickson, who wrote the original pilot and was to executive produce with Daniels, Tracy Katsky, Gabe Miller and Jonathan Green.

The original Mr. Robinson pilot also starred Larenz Tate, Amanda Lund and Jean Smart. Their options were extended over the summer as NBC mulled the fate of the pilot, but deals for cast members beyond Robinson have not been signed.

NBC initially passed on Mr. Robinson last spring but kept options alive as the network looked to redevelop the show. Universal TV and 3 Arts Entertainment are producing.

As NBC looks to refocus its comedy brand, the network has already ordered another series with a former Office castmember: Ellie Kemper, whose untitled sitcom from exec producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock is also set for next season. NBC additionally ordered the comedy Working the Engels for next season.
