Julia Roberts Opens Up About Half-Sister’s Suicide

Date April 21, 2014

Julia Roberts

Julia Roberts is still grieving the loss of her half-sister, Nancy Motes, who died from a drug overdose in February at the age of 37.

In a new interview with WSJ Magazine, the actress finally addressed Motes' suicide, and how she's dealing with the pain.

"It's hour by hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead," she said. "You don't want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world. But [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family."

Roberts' next project is Ryan Murphy's upcoming HBO film The Normal Heart, based on Larry Kramer's award-winning play about the onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s. In the film she plays Dr. Brookner, a character based on real-life Dr. Linda Laubenstein who treated early cases of AIDS in New York City.
