Her 'Two and a Half Men' character Bridget (the second character she's played on the show -- she's that good) is the one who left Ashton Kutcher's Walden Schmidt brokenhearted and forced to shack up with Alan and Jake Harper. This week, we'll meet Bridget's rebound man, played by 'True Blood' star Joe Manganiello.
Since Kutcher got naked for ratings in his big premiere, could the eternally shirtless Manganiello (we're not complaining) be stripping down for his big introduction, too? "He could, at the drop of a hat, take off his shirt and give Ashton a run for his money," Greer joked.
Greer also talked about the "fresher" new 'Men,' her upcoming film 'The Descendants' with George Clooney, where she thinks her 'Arrested Development' mess of a character Kitty Sanchez might be today and if she'll pop up in the much-anticipated 'AD' movie.
We always hope that one of your series regular gigs will work out, but when they don't, for whatever reason, you are everywhere.
Yeah, I always get really heartbroken about my TV shows not working out ... even though you'd think I'd be like totally used to it by now. [Laughs] It's always a drag, but I have to say, knocking on wood, I never worry because there's always another thing. I've had a lot of really good luck.
You can call it luck, but it's very rare for an actress to be so in demand, all the time.
When we found out 'Mad Love' was canceled, that night I met Jason Biggs and his wife for a drink. We were feeling really sorry for ourselves, and Jason was like, "What do you care? You're probably just gonna go and be on 'Two and a Half Men' or something!" [Laughs] We have a very brother-sister, giving each other sh*t kind of relationship, and I was like, "You're such an a**hole, no I'm not. I'm probably never gonna work again." And then, sure enough, like a couple weeks later I got the phone call. I couldn't tell him right away because I had to sign this thing and not talk about it -- I couldn't even tell my parents for a while -- so I couldn't rub it in Biggs' face.
How many episodes are you signed on for?
My fourth episode is [tonight], and I'm booked to do one more. I'm not a regular on it, but I think they'll probably have me back. I hope.
So you're having fun? Because you were on the show once before ...
Yeah, I [played] a totally different person with Charlie. Even then I remember ... I did two episodes back-to-back, and it's such a great job. It was weird, and maybe I just have zero self-esteem, but I was like, "No one's even gonna know or remember." But I get recognized from those two episodes a lot. I just didn't think writers and critics and stuff would remember. Everyone watches it!
Do you feel like it's a totally different vibe on set now, as opposed to how it was with Charlie Sheen?
I kind of do. But it doesn't feel like a different show, it just feels fresher. Kind of like when your friend gets an awesome new haircut, and you're like, "You're so beautiful, but you're just kind of more beautiful now." [Laughs] It's like 'Two and a Half Men' took a really long holiday and then came back really refreshed and ready to go. Well, yeah, literally. But Ashton adds so much youth and vitality and energy to the set ... everyone feels very happy to be there.
Joe Manganiello from 'True Blood' is on tonight's episode, playing your new man. Tough life for you ...
He is so beautiful. It's kind of insane -- there's a scene with me standing between Joe and Ashton, and it's like, are you joking? They were teasing on set about how hard it was to find someone that would make Ashton jealous, because he's such a tall drink of water, and so cute, charming and sexy and all that, and then when I saw Joe at the table read, I was like, "Holy sh*t, of course!" [Laughs]
Ashton got completely naked in the premiere, and Joe is always shirtless on 'True Blood.' Will we be seeing some skin from Joe tonight?
Not yet. I mean I don't think that's the worst idea anyone's ever had in the history of ideas. He could, at the drop of a hat, take off his shirt and give Ashton a run for his money. He was working out a lot for ['Magic Mike'] with Steven Soderbergh ...
Which sounds like the most amazing movie ever! His character's name is "Big D*ck Richie"! It's quite possibly the most beautiful male cast ever, and they're all playing strippers.
Yeah, he was really cute talking about it because he was saying that his buddies back in Pittsburgh were gonna be like, "What are you doing, man?" [Laughs] I can't wait to see if it does better than 'Bridesmaids' -- I think it'll be really sad if it does, if all the women are like, "'Bridesmaids' is awesome, but that movie?" I recently re-watched 'Mr. Mom' and it's like that scene where they kidnap him and take him to the stripper show ... it was all those suburban moms screaming and freaking out. [Laughs] It's so good -- it totally holds up.
Speaking of movies, the buzz around 'The Descendants' ... wow. This is big for you.
I know. It's pretty huge. If I emailed you my schedule for the next month, it's sort of bananas. Everyone wants to talk about this movie, everyone is excited about this movie, and I haven't talked to anyone who's seen it and wasn't blown away by it. It's exciting to be a part of something like that. It's kind of the best of both worlds in a way, because it felt kind of indie when we were shooting it -- I mean, I was with George Clooney and we were in Hawaii, but it didn't feel like one of those crazy, giant productions. Alexander Payne keeps everything very intimate. But it's getting a lot of attention now, and I think rightly so.
It's one of those movies that I feel like people have been talking about forever. It just needs to hit theaters so everyone will get to see it for themselves.
I realized I was talking about it so much because I was so excited about it, and now that it's closer to happening, I want my friends to know nothing about it when they go to see it.
When you're in a movie like that, and on a big TV show, do you still step back and think, 'Wow, this is awesome ... but I'd still really like to work with _____'?
I have a whole list of people that I wrote down, actually, when the new year started. Instead of making New Year's resolutions this year, I just made a long list of people I wanted to work with. My dream always was to work with Alexander Payne, so I feel like that ... that's kind of why I made the list. I was like, "Now what?" I felt like my dream for my career had come true ...
You needed a new vision board!
I totally needed a new vision board! I did put Alexander back on the list though. I want more! And I put Patrick Wilson back on the list, because I had the most fun working with him on 'Barry Munday.' It was fun to think of it in terms of people instead of being like, "I want to be in a big movie" or "I want to be on a TV show."
But I hope that somewhere on there is the 'Arrested Development' movie, because everyone loves Kitty Sanchez.
I know! It's so awesome -- I didn't do that many episodes, but that character left such an impression. I hope I'm in the movie! I don't know yet ... I can't say yes or no because they haven't really ... there's just nothing for reals about it for me yet. I feel like there needs to be something. Maybe there could be another Bluth? I don't know, maybe Kitty did get pregnant? That would be so awesome. It'd be funny to play that role again too, after so many years.
