The news comes just after Biden was re-elected on Tuesday, and the post-election reveal is no coincidence. "It was all very byzantine and complicated," executive producer Michael Schur told The New York Times, which first reported the news. "There seem to be all kinds of specific rules, which I never fully understood. But we decided to err on the side of caution."
One of these rules included a warming that if Biden's cameo leaked before Election Day, Parks and Recwould have to feature Republican vice presidential hopeful Paul Ryan in a similar fashion. At the time, the request confused Shur, since the episode was shot in July before Ryan was announced as the Republican nominee.

Biden's cameo, on the other hand, was a snap. "The vice president was amazing," Schur said. "He improvised a couple of things that we ended up using."
Biden also has nothing but praise for the NBC sitcom. "My whole family loves Parks and Recreation and I had a great time filming that scene," he said in a statement. "It was a real honor that in my sitcom debut I got to meet someone like Leslie Knope, who believes so deeply in public service. She's an example for men and women across the country that there's no higher calling than helping other people. On a personal note, I'll never figure out how Leslie Knope got my home phone number, but that really just shows how committed she is."
