Is Arrested Development Season 4 Adding Extra Episodes?

Date August 23, 2012

Shooting is underway for the Netflix-only Season 4 of Arrested Development, but the original plan of doing a 10-episode season with each installment focusing on a single character may be scrapped. Instead, the season may be expanded to 13 episodes, star David Cross tells Rolling Stone.

"There's too much story," says Cross, who plays the hapless Tobias Fünke on the show. "Some characters will have two-parters."

With Arrested Development having been off the air since 2006, the writers certainly have some catching up to do when it comes to the Bluths. And, true to form, creator Mitch Hurwitz has made it so that each episode of Season 4 will be packed with blink-and-you-miss-them jokes and inside references to other elements of the show, Cross says.

"It's so layered," he says. "It's really audacious and amazing. I think a lot of people will miss the work that is involved, the story, the Venn diagrams that are being created, the domino effect that characters have with each other in their various episodes. I know what [Hurwitz is] doing, and this has never been done on a TV show like this. This makes Lost look like a Spalding Grey monologue. You'll have to watch each episode more than once."

Though the fourth season may be expanded, there's no word on whether Netflix will stick to the plan of premiering all the episodes at the same time. But Cross, for one, knows fans will gather en masse to revisit the show as soon as it becomes available.

"I think there's gonna be a lot of power outages across North America," he predicts. "I think the grid is gonna go down."
