Hannibal Casts Michael Pitt as Dr. Lecter's New Nemesis

Date January 31, 2014

Michael Pitt

Michael Pitt has joined Hannibal as a new foe for Dr. Lecter, Entertainment Weeklyreports.

Pitt will play Mason Verger, an unstable, wealthy patient of Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen), a role originated by Gary Oldman in the 2001 film HannibalWhen Verger is introduced late into the second season of the NBC show, he will develop a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with the cannibal killer.

Bad guys we root for

As anyone who saw the film or read Thomas Harris' Hannibal novel knows, this game won't end well for Verger. Set years after the events of the NBC show's current season, the book finds Verger as the only surviving victim of Dr. Lecter, who convinced him to hang himself and cut off most of his own face and feed it to dogs.

This younger version of Verger will be different than the pedophile's previous incarnations and has been compared to Andrew Scott's frantic and flamboyant portrayal of Moriarty on Sherlock.

What do you think of Pitt as Verger?

Hannibal returns Friday, Feb. 28 at 10/9c on NBC.
