'Farscape' Creator To Develop Crime Drama 'Cult' On The CW Six Years After The WB Dropped It

'Farscape' Creator To Develop Crime Drama 'Cult' On The CW Six Years After The WB Dropped It

Six years ago, "Farscape" creator and executive producer, Rockne S. O'Bannon, developed an idea for a new crime drama called "Cult," and sold the project to the WB, according to Vulture. Shortly after ordering the pilot -- and casting actor Matthew Bomer as the lead -- CBS and Warner Bros. axed both The WB and UPN and replaced them with one teen-centric network, the CW.

Unfortunately for O'Brannon, the "Cult" project got the ax as well, after the CW's new management dumped the pilot. However, six years later, the CW is ready to finally make the move on O'Brannon's crime thriller. Of course, there had to be a few edits to make "Cult" work with the network's teen content. At the time, O'Brannon's pilot was deemed "too dark" by network execs, but after some revision, the CW has finally ordered a pilot from the "Farscape" creator.

Here's the synopsis for the series, via Entertainment Weekly. "After a rash of disappearances and a likely murder, an inquisitive, young female production assistant on a wildly popular television show called Cult joins a journalist blogger in investigating the rabid fans of the series who might be re-creating crimes seen on the program, in real life."

"Gossip Girl" executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage are on board the project, along with Len Goldstein. O'Brannon will write and executive produce the pilot.
