Drew Peterson Found Guilty of Murdering Third Wife

Date September 06, 2012

Drew Peterson

Drew Peterson was found guilty of murdering his third wife, Kathleen Savio, Thursday in Joliet, Ill., The Herald News reports.

The conviction came after six weeks of testimony and nearly 14 hours of deliberation by the jury. As the verdict was read, Savio's brother-in-law, Mitch Doman, cried and hugged Savio's sisters, Anna and Sue.  "We got the bastard," Doman said as he left the courtroom.

Peterson, 58, faces up to 60 years in prison. His sentencing is set for Nov. 26. "I consider this the first step in a successful appeal," one of Peterson's defense attorneys, Joel Brodsky, told reporters after the verdict. "There are several world class attorneys waiting to sink their teeth into this."

Savio died after drowning in her bathtub in 2004 — a death that was ruled accidental until authorities re-opened the investigation in 2007 after Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared. She is still missing. Peterson has been in jail since he was arrested in May 2009.

The suspicions surrounding Savio's death and his fourth wife's subsequent disappearance were the subject of the Lifetime TV movie Drew Peterson: Untouchable, starring Rob Lowe as Peterson and Kaley Cuoco as Stacy Peterson. The movie grabbed 5.8 million viewers in January.
