I'd heard about 'RuPaul's Drag Race' stand-out Shangela guest starring, but when I visited the 'Community' set and saw rainbow flags everywhere and a script with that fabulous title on it, I got really excited.
And finding out that Shangela's scenes would be with Greendale's most inappropriate, unfiltered, racist, gaycist student, Pierce Hawthorne (Chevy Chase)? People, it doesn't get more awkward than this.
So I broke my 'Community' set visit streak -- no matter how many times I've been on that set, I never seem to talk to Chase -- and got a little scoop about Pierce's lesson in advanced gay from the man himself. Keep reading for more ... including Chase spouting terms like "a gay," "a straight" and "a tranny" in the most Hawthorne-ian of ways.
What can you tell us about 'Advanced Gay'?
That's a pretty funny episode. Pierce has Hawthorne Wipes fans, and they're gay. They came up to him and he didn't know a gay from a straight, and he signed a thing of Hawthorne Wipes for them. Then he ended up with more fans that were gay ... and then he came in with a different shirt one day with the name of some singer, Urbana Champaign, who's really a tranny [played by Shangela]. Also new Hawthorne Pride Wipes that he was releasing. [Laughs] The sales will go up seven percent!
What is the gay community using the Hawthorne Wipes for?
Well ... [laughs] that's where we're getting to an area that I'm not ... I'm not even sure. But you can imagine!
(I couldn't write about this episode and not include this awesome picture -- has Ben Chang finally met his match?)
That's it -- anything more would spoil the fun, which also includes another appearance by John Goodman's Dean Laybourne and a cameo by Pierce's dad, Cornelius Hawthorne, played by Larry Cedar.
What do you think: Can the gay community change 'Community''s anti-everything Pierce?
