CNN lifts Roland Martin's suspension

Date March 13, 2012

LOS ANGELES, March 13 (TheWrap.com) - Roland Martin has been reinstated at CNN, after a month-long time-out springing from his offensive tweets during this year's Super Bowl.

Martin, who drew the scorn of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and others, has had his suspension lifted at CNN, the cable news network told TheWrap. Martin was suspended on February 8. At the time, CNN called Martin's tweet "regrettable and offensive."

During the Super Bowl on February 5, Martin urged physical violence against male viewers who enjoyed David Beckham's underwear ad for H&M.

"If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him!" one of Martin's tweets read.

Another tweet asked, "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from #teamwhipdatass."

GLAAD condemned Martin's tweet, and pointed out that the commentator has a history of condoning violence against homosexuals, such as when he publicly supported Tracy Morgan after the "30 Rock" star said that he would stab his son if he told him he were gay.

Martin denied that he condoned violence against gays in a subsequent blog post, writing, "That is furthest from the truth, and I sincerely regret any offense my words have caused."

In an effort to patch things up, Martin met with GLAAD's Herndon Graddick on February 14.
