Have no fear, AOL TV is here. We'll be spotlighting five episodes from some of the best scripted comedies and dramas on TV that you need to see before jumping into the new season this fall.
Up now? 'The Good Wife.'
Starring Julianna Margulies, 'The Good Wife' tells the story of lawyer Alicia Florrick, her crumbling marriage and everything she does to keep her life moving after a very public scandal involving her husband, Peter, the State's Attorney of Chicago. After Peter is caught cheating and sent to jail on corruption charges, Alicia goes to work at the law firm of her former college flame, Will Gardner (Josh Charles).
Rounding out the cast is Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart, Will's law partner, Archie Panjabi as Kalinda, the firms mysterious investigator and close friend to Alicia, Alan Cumming as political strategist Eli Gold and Matt Czuchry as Cary Agos, Alicia's competitive lawyer frienemy.
The series enters its third season on Sun., Sept. 25 at 9PM on CBS. Interested in tuning in? These are five episodes you need to watch before diving head first into the critically acclaimed legal drama.
1. 'Pilot' (Season 1, Episode 1)
Why you need to watch it: The first episode not only introduces us to all the show's main players, including Alicia's new co-workers at Lockhart/Gardner, it also gives us a taste of the drama the show serves up on a weekly basis. It's not 'TGW''s best case-of-the-week, but with all the character growth that takes place over two seasons, it's nice to meet the characters at the beginning.
2. 'Heart' (Season 1, Episode 17)
Why you need to watch it: A poignant episode for its touching character moments, 'Heart' also features a stellar performance from guest star Martha Plimpton. An emergency courtroom is set up in a hospital with Alicia's firm representing a client whose unborn baby requires surgery, but the insurance company has stopped the procedure, citing its experimental nature. Plus, Alicia shares steamy moments with her boss Will and newly freed husband, Peter! What a love triangle to be stuck in the middle of.
3. 'Taking Control' (Season 2, Episode 1)
Why you need to watch it: There's a new Alicia Florrick in town. She's sassier and isn't afraid of getting what she wants. That's the theme of Season 2, and the premiere sets up the new status quo perfectly. Well, that is until the bombshell -- Lockhart/Garnder has merged with a new firm and Alicia gets a new mentor, Derrick Bond.
4. 'In Sickness' (Season 2, Episode 21)
Why you need to watch it: In the previous episode, Alicia discovers a heartbreaking secret about her husband, one that rocks both her professional and person lives. In this episode -- the one Julianna Margulies submitted for the Best Actress Emmy race -- Alicia confronts her husband about his devastating betrayal and works through her emotions with her two children. It's a must-watch solely for Margulies' performance.
5. 'Closing Arguments' (Season 2, Episode 23)
Why you need to watch it: The fallout from Peter's secret has started to settle -- sort of -- just as a new regime prepares to take over the State's Attorney office. Will goes toe-to-toe with the Glenn Childs, the outgoing State's Attorney, and Alicia lets her hair down. The episode ends with a very sexy cliffhanger. You'll be thinking of those elevator doors just in time for Season 3 to start.
