Andy Griffith, the television icon who headlined The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock, died Tuesday morning, North Carolina's WITN News reports. He was 86.

Former University of North Carolina President Bill Friday, a friend of Griffith's, told the station that the actor died in his Roanoke Island, N.C., home around 7 a.m.

The Dare County Sheriff's office would only confirm to TVGuide.com that paramedics were called to Griffith's residence Tuesday morning. An email to Griffith's rep was not immediately returned.

Griffith is most famous for his portrayal of Mayberry town sheriff Andy Taylor from The Andy Griffith Show and as the titular defense lawyer on the legal drama Matlock.
