American Wins Boston Marathon for First Time Since 1985

Date April 21, 2014

Meb Keflezighi

An American has won the Boston Marathon for the first time in 29 years.

One year after the horrific bombing that gripped the nation and left three people dead and many more injured, Meb Keflezighi, 39, finished the race with a time of 2:08:37. He fought off Wilson Chebet, who closed Keflezighi's lead, which was nearly 90 seconds at one point, to just six seconds in the final two miles.

Competing in the women's division, Rita Jeptoo of Kenya won her second-straight women's division title. Her 2:18:57 finish set a new course record.

Keflezighi was born in Africa and immigrated to the United States in 1987 when he was 12 years old. After winning four NCAA championships while a student at UCLA, he went on to win the silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and placed fourth in the marathon at the 2012 London games.
