As the American Idol contestants tackled the songs of the '80s this week, family ties were strong for Phillip Phillips' performance of Genesis' "That's All," as his brother-in-law, Ben, joined the Idol band on guitar.
"It was all kind of a surprise to me," Phillips told TV Guide Magazine after the show. "We've been playing together ever since I started playing guitar, so he's an inspiration. I've always wanted me and him to have that experience together on a big stage like that."
Ben also had input on Phillips' song selection. "It was between [Peter Gabriel's] 'Sledgehammer' and ['That's All'], but my brother-in-law helped me pick," revealed Phillips. "I don't feel like it was my best performance tonight — it was a little rough — but I got through it."
While the judges weren't too harsh on Phillips, it was a different story for his duet partner, Elise Testone, whose solo rendition of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is" was heavily critiqued by the panel.
"I felt like I was really singing it from my heart, but it's a hard thing to get judged when you're doing something that you love," said Testone. "It's hard to take the criticism, but everyone has an opinion and that's what we're here for, to get criticized."
