ABC to Debut Good Afternoon America This July

Date May 21, 2012

Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott

ABC announced Monday that Good Morning America will be extended by an hour this coming July with the new program Good Afternoon America set to air weekdays at 2/1c.

Premiering on July 9, Good Afternoon America will be hosted by GMAanchor Lara Spencer and Josh Elliott. It replaces ABC's short-lived self-improvement daytime show, The Revolution

Ratings: Good Morning America ends Today's 16-year winning streak

"It's tremendous that GMA has this opportunity to extend its reach, and bring something new to the afternoons," Elliott said in a statement.  "It is gratifying to play a role in it and genuinely hope our audience will come along for the ride."

Added Spencer: " Good Afternoon America gives us the opportunity to reach a different audience, and better yet, spend a little more time with our morning viewers who want to be a part of the conversation and fun we plan on bringing to afternoon TV."

ABC renews General Hospital, cancels The Revolution

GMA's expansion follows a similar move made by Today back in 2008, when the NBC morning show added a fourth hour at 10/9c hosted by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford. (No word yet on whether GAAwill be as wine-soaked as the fourth hour of Today).

The addition of Good Afternoon America also follows GMA's recent ratings victory over Today. The ABC morning show beat Todayin the week ending April 13 — the first such defeat in 16 years. GAA also comes in advance of a highly anticipated addition to ABC's daytime schedule — Katie Couric's new talk show — which is set to debut sometime in the fall.
